Institute for weekly planning

During the Christianization of the (Old High) German-speaking area, the missionaries were anxious to enforce, if possible, weekday names that did not remind of pagan (Roman or Germanic) gods. This becomes clear on the one hand with Wednesday, where with the designation of the day in the weekly schedule the actually expected name Wotan (cf. English Wednesday) was bypassed. The other example is the naming of the day before Sunday: Satertag, borrowed from Latin (Saturni dies), extends into English (Saturday), but is more and more displaced in the German-speaking world by two other terms - a neutral Sonnabend and a Christian-influenced Samstag. Satertag/Saterdag survives only in Low German and today even there only in dialect.
